"I see you didn't wake up too long ago." He smiled letting her take his hand and decorate every inch of it. He had come to learn that messing with her in the mornings was more like messing with a very cranky bear.

"I don't know what you are talking about I'm always like this." She continued scribbling pretty things on his hand chuckling lightly at his snort, "Well maybe not exactly."

"Not exactly may be a bit of an understatement." He laughed, using his right hand to scribble down words in his refined script.

She peaked over his hand at his handwriting. She thought it was amazing. Her words looked like a completely different language than his did. It made her a tiny bit envious but not enough to really cause harm. He must've felt her stop drawing on his hand and figured she was done. He tries to pull his hand away but he growled deeply In her throat at him, and grabbed his hand in her own. She flipped his hand over palm up so that she could doodle on the center of his hand.

Everett laughed slightly at the tiny scratches of the pen against his skin, it tickled and made it very hard to focus. "Esther..." He was going to rebel against her grip in his hand, but he shut his mouth after reconsideration.

"I will growl at you if you pull this hand away. If you're lucky I might bite" Esther commented when she felt the muscles in his arm move in such a way that indicated that he would pull his arm away.

"And what if I bite back?" He said, finally lifting his gaze from his books to meet hers.

"I-" HI'd face turned a little red, not too much from his usual demeanor.

"You're too sweet for your own good Everette." Esther commented, "I'll leave you to your studies now." She put the pen away, kissed his cheek and rolled out of the room.

"I wouldn't mind if you came to visit every once and a while..." He murmured almost dissapointed she was leaving. Yes, he had work to do, but having her around had made it better even if for a few minutes.

"All you have to do is find me, and ask." Esther called while rolling out of the room, "Ask and you shall receive."

"Then expect quite a few requests." He smiled, returning his focus to his work. As he went to shift a paper, he looked at the hand decorated by esther. Tiny yet fluent patterns shone over every inch of his hand. The small markings made his chest tighten, just at the thought the fact that she had done something so darned cute.

"Expect to be drawn on more!" Esther yelled from her door. She rolled into her room, and locked all of the locks on her door. She turned around to a wall full of sketches that were the blueprints to her new legs. She suspected they would take her a few months for her to complete at least two if she worked late almost every day. She would have to request Grandpa Finley melt the metal for her. Is she asked nicely enough maybe she could even convince him to not tell any of the family.

"Back to work then." He whispered to himself, completely delving himself into the work, only distracted by the small squeaks from his younger siblings. Every once in a while he would check on them, and then return to his desk as soon as they were quiet.
He had hardly noticed the passing of time, until the bright orange rays of sun reflected off of the windows across the street. He was mostly done with his work, but there was so much more to do. His brain was a bit frazzled but the last book he had work to do in sat on his desk.
With tired eyes, he placed the book in front of him and started scribbling notes in an exhausted haze. He couldn't recall how, but his face was soon planted sideways on his desk with his arm keeping it from touching the hard wood.
It was days like these when he would work so hard for a goal he wanted, a goal his father wanted, that they would come back. He remembered his father having similar nights where he would mutter in his sleep and shake until someone woke him, but even then he wouldn't be normal for a few days.
Since his death Everett found himself caught in the middle of the very same kind of dreams.
