Jack stepped forward, heart pounding and eyes burning at the black storm covering his city. He stared at the small book, inching forward to see that maybe just maybe it wasn't what he was thinking, and that Harvey was just lost or still in the library or-
He didn't know why he had even tried convincing himself that he was okay. He stared over the small heavily charred cover, recognizing a word through the ash that had settled. His heart sank lower than he thought it could ever go, so low he doubted he even had it anymore. His sweet Harvey with his sweet smile was gone, and
"Its all your fault." The ginger girl whimpered behind him, completeing his thoughts as tears flooded the base of her eyes. The tall boy behind her grabbed her hand in an effort to soothe her, but he knew that comfort would not come easily to her, nor to Jack himself for that matter. Jack gingerly picked up the bady burnt book, cradling it in his hands as he looked back up to the two, when he noticed the true height of the flames, quickly approaching him. The warmth from the fires licked his skin, leaving a slight stinging all over his body. His heart rate quickened, his eyes opened wide, and with one quick second he had ran to the tall boy, staring far up into his concerned face.
"We have to get out." He gasped, trying to breathe and the tall boy nodded before Jack led the way to the only place out of the city that didn't put them in the direct path of the flames. His lungs burned and heaved as he desperately tried to evade the smog. They sprinted until reaching the end of the buildings where the street turned into a bridge over a small but clean river. He saw a group of familiar faces, all staring back at the flames with unimaginable shock plastering their faces. He turned back to face the fire, starting to spread to the last of his city, his home.
Annette stood on the bridge, facing the fire, her hand still linked with Riley's. She pulled forward slightly, but he hld her back. She was numb, tears slowly flowing down her face. "I have to go back Riley."
"You can't." She felt unnecessary anger start to bubble up inside of her at that comment. What do you mean 'I can't, I have to help him...
"He's still in there Riley... I have to go back." Her voice broke as she instisted on moving, but tightly laced fingers prevented that. She gazed down the street watching as everythig in the inferoes path was swept up and charred. She saw a figure moving towards them, and her heart skipped a beat. A glimmer of hope flashed in her mind. He's okay! He's okay. he's-
Her body was half metal, the cold copper covering half of her face glittered in the light of the fires, and one cold blue eye stared strongly ahead. The other eye shined a deep, dark red. She cast her gaze straight into the soul of the ginger girl, a gaze that seemed to know all of her fears, a gaze she couldn't place where she had seen it once before. Annette looked father down the girl to find two legs made entirely of metal, two blades streching down the long prothstetics. Her head spun, they looked vaugely familliar, very similar to those her grandfather had made in his workshop when she was just a little kid.
A dark and serious voice brought Annettes focus back to the face of the half-metal girl, "You."
Riley stepped in front of Annette, standing tall with determination. Riley let go of her hand, blocking the half metal girl from getting anywhere near her. He lunged at the girl in a short lived effort to protect the ginger. "I won't let you touch her!"
He stated these words strongly before Annette saw a glint of light fly in front of Riley's face, knocking him aside and splling red, warm blood across the bridge. Annette glanced down to see on of the girls legs dripping with the blood of the boy who always tried to protect her. The rage that had been bubbling inside Annette boiled over sending her flinging at the half metal girl with her own metal arm. Another glint of light and she was knocked onto her back, tears slowing with the utter shock of the action.
"Your brother is fine for now." She said straight into Annettes eyes, a flash of sympathy showing in the blue gaze. "Just as long as Violet doesn't get to him."
She turned and walked straight back into the roaring flames, and Annette looked over at Riley, his face covered by his light brown hair with red leaching through. She scrambeled over to him and pushed back his hair with her non metallic hand to expose the deep wound spreading across his face, oozing blood onto the stone of the bridge. She let her tears flow as she gently cupped his jaw in her hand, relieved to see a weak green gaze looking back at her. He gave a tired grin and Annette let go, bringing her hands close to her heart as she stared down at her own lap, watching the tears slowly drip onto her pants. She breathed heavily and off rythm as she attempted to process everything that had just happened. She closed her eyes tightly, it was too much, Too much.
She felt two arms close around her, and a face pressed into her hair, leaving a warm wetness on her scalp, and she did nothing to object. He squeezed her tighter, keeping her upright as she buried her face into his shoulder, letting all of her pain and confusion out from her heart. Harvey's gone... Riley is hurt... and its all your fault isn't it. Riley whispered in her ear, slow, gentile words that she needed to be told.
"It's okay Annette. It's going to be okay."
