"Well- I think that Esmeralda has a decent collection she's always willing to share if it's books you're after, I can take you there, nothing too pressing is being thrown at me right now."

"I would like that." Harvey exclaimed finally able to meet the beautiful eyes of the shorter man, his smile blooming on his face.

"Alright, this way." he pulled open the door, heading down a path off to the left, winding and long though the labyrinth of buildings the lamps were less frequent around here, it grew less vibrant, but an occasional banner of colored cloth still decorated the wall. Eventually, he stopped and knocked on a door, "Mierda- Un momenta, one moment, I'm coming." Was the rough, smoke scarred voice of a woman inside. "Good, I was starting to think I was keeping all these for no one but myself," Huffed a thickset woman with dark hair, "Come on in Jack, who's your friend?"

"I'm Harvey, miss." He said shyly, using all of the possible mannerisms his sister had taught him as a small child.

Jack stepped into the building, gesturing Harvey inside. He stepped up the two brick steps and blinked to find all of the walls filled with old looking books. He smiled in pure joy, and put his hand out to touch the backs of the books nearest to him. His soft, small smile was suddenly huge, probably the widest smile he had ever had on his face since he was little. He simply stood there, a tiny blush on his face and his newly rediscovered beam, in pure joy with the things he adored the most in the world around him.
He had seen large collections and visited them before, but nothing had ever felt so magical. He turned his smile back to the smaller man in pure delight.

He blinked, trying to figure out what it was that facinated the redhead so much, books themselves had always seemed so pointless- what made it so much better to look at things that could just as easily be spread by word of mouth? His judgement may have been bias, granted his status, and lack of literacy, but it made him wonder how it was stacks of paper tied toget and covered in cow skin could make the boy smile like he had never been able to.

"I haven't seen books like these for years." He said plucking one off of the shelf and opening its worn down pages cafefully.

"I was unaware it was a rarity." He didn't dare look away, for fear the smile would slip away when he wasn't looking.

"Well, a lot of the books we had were rather new, and mostly manuals and records. These ones are actual words, poetry, not just mechanical junk." He gazed into Jacks eyes, then looked down again at the pages, running his hand down the crease of the book. He sighed quietly and almost sadly, "The last time I saw one like this was at the library."

"Oh- uh." He blinked, having had little idea as to what books involved; they were expensive, hard to learn to understand, and were no better than vocal explanation.

"Jack..." he stared at the small mans face, an expression of confusion and a small amount of something... was that /sadness./
"Can... can you read?" He studdered, his smile faded to concern.

"Never needed to, why?" He looked unsure, as if he had been afraid of this outcome to the conversation. And he had- the happy look was gone, and he was prepared to fight to put it back.
Wait what? He barely knew this kid! His face flushed lightly at his own thoughts.

"I've always relied on them... I forgot that some people can't..." He looked down at the ground, and the words stopped as an idea came into his head. He smiled again, turning around and picking up a title he recognized. "They're like an adventure i'm too scared to go on. I liked that I didn't have to brave to read, but the stories would get lonely after a while."
He turned around with pink cheeks and his tilted grin.
"Jack, I want to go on this adventure with you."

His breath hitched, not because of the words, no, he'd never learned to read simply because it wasn't required of him, he didn't want to. No, the reason why he lost coherent thought when the words left his mouth was the look of soft but powerful determination on his pale face.
He opened his mouth but no words would escape it, he struggled, floundering for a few counts, before catching himself and nodding.
