He grabbed Jack's hand and pulled him to a small table in the corner with a few chairs, sitting him down. He sat himself, facing him, only a few feet away, their legs awkwardly tangled under the table. Mostly because Harvey was too large for the small table, but the slight touch of their legs was a nice sensation to Harvey, like pins and needles but not physically and more emotionally.
Harvey opened the book, and began to recite the words slowly and carefully. His face rested on his his hand and the book in the other. He didn't have much of an intent to teach Jack to read, unless he asked, but for him to understand what he had done as a child, what he had relied on, was exactly what Harvey had wanted and needed.

He leaned back against the wall in the dark, when had it gotten dark- where was he? His breaths were coming too fast- or had they always been like that. Were there spots in his vision, or was that just the darkness. He slid down down down down the wall. He couldn't feet his fingers, or maybe he just didn't have any? 1, 2, 3, 4- of course he didn't have them- they had cut them off when he got it wrong.
They had cut all of it off.

After the meeting with Jack, Annette had dragged Riley around with her in the city, just to see where they were going to be staying. They stayed within a four block in each direction radius, making sure they wouldn't get too lost, but apparently they had not made sure enough and /someone/ had gotten them lost.
Annette thought she had been keeping track but after about 30 minutes of roaming around, they had decereed themselves lost. Of course, Annette refused to admit this, forcing Riley to ask for directions in a language he barely knew, but they found their way back after 2 hours, leaving an hour to spare.
Thats what they were still doing, sitting, talking, and laughing like they should have done the entire time.
"I wonder what everyone else is doing right now." Annette said laying on the floor, looking out at the sky above the city.
"I didn't see anyone really." He sighed. "Thats probably because they weren't lost half of the time."
"We weren't lost we were just... exploring an unknown land."
"Yeah exploring." He charcastically stated.
"Shut up."

Her head rested on her knees and she didn't move, eyes blank, motionless, one had to look closely to see the scarce motion of her breathing. Taylor. Her rock, her hero. ----- It hadn't been home, but she'd never had one to compare it to, her mother likely a whore and father a rich man with a wife. She was left to the church. It wasn't bad, there was food, education, shelter, she wasn't bullied or anything like that. No one hurt her- physically, at first.
And then she hit 16, all curves and long hair and eyelashes dark like raven feathers on tanned cheeks and hips. She'd seen the stares and done nothing to stop them, they made her special, wanted. Lust was a sin, they'd taught her so. It seemed natural she be punished for invoking it.

"It was fun though." He smiled. Looking at the great blue eternity above the two
"What?" She turned her face to look at his.
"Getting lost with you."
Annette blushed slightly and turned her face back to the sky. She exhaled.
"Exploring."
"Whatever." He laughed, then shifted his head again, more serious than the last. "What exactly happened on the ship."
"Why do you ask?"
"Seeing as you were limping slightly, I thought it would be best to know."
Annette frowned. /I thought I hid it well enough./ She sighed, and lifted up her shirt to expose the sutures on her lower abdomen. They were nearly black, despite the medical care of Valentina.
"Oh." He looked pained. They sat there staring at the sky in silence.
"One other thing."
"Yes?" Annette said, a little afraid of what he might ask.
"You know you can tell me if something is bothering you. I can help."

The first time it happened, she'd cried, she'd been confused, wondered what god was punishing her for. The second time she didn't speak or eat for three days. The third time she acted like nothing was wrong. The lecherous looks and touches were normal a year later, the nicknames, the rooming separate from the other girls. They were all jealous, though she was paying him off for special treatment. Year number two was when she realized how hollow she was, when she started searching for something to make her feel, even a spark of anger or joy- So she stole the cheese knife after she had kitchen duty.
They never had cheese anyway.
She thought her blood itself was much prettier than she was, it reminded her of being little and watching the rain drip drip drip from the crack in the ceiling before they sealed it up, and another opened up a day later. It was thicker, and darker, more poetic on her caramel skin. And it crossed her mind that, maybe with more scars she wouldn't be pretty anymore. Maybe she'd never have to hear him whispering into her ear, telling her how beautiful she was. Maybe she'd never be alone in a bed she shared with a man who was not her husband, sticky and cold between the legs.
They asked, now and then, when they were forced to act like hey liked her. "How did you get that?" "Nasty cut you got there." She'd smile and offer an excuse about a kitchen accident. Sometimes it was a reminder that she was alive, dead people didn't bleed, so it was a reassurance, or a comfort of some kind, that she was not yet it hell, that she had a chance for redemption for the sins she had committed once her punishment was over.

"Yeah I know." Her stomach curled, Please don't bring them up, but what if it's not that, what if...
"And I'd never force anything out of you."
"Yes, why is there something you need to know?" Annette if you didn't want to talk about it why did you bring it closer. You can't even listen to your own emotions, your own thoughts can you.
"When did they start again." He asked, quietly and more emotionally than Annette had expected, yes he cared about her, but she wasn't worth that much.
"Since the crash." She let more show then she wanted to in those words.
"Why didn't you tell me." The soft tone of the boy turned sharper, louder, he sat up.
"I'm fine, Riley." She too began to raise her voice, the tone bouncing off of the walls around them. She stood, looking down at him.
"You aren't Annette! You were crying in your sleep Annette, no matter what I did it still took you ages to calm down. You don't have to try and face this alone." Poignant words flew from his mouth. He too rose to his feet.
"No matter what you did? The hell did you do while I was- you know what, that doesn't matter. Leave me alone." She turned away choking back tears, wanting to be anywhere but this situation, she began to walk forward.
"No!" He grabbed her wrist, turning her to face him, small cry mixing into the yells.
"Why do you even care." She screamed, letting the flood rise, but not breaking the dam. The grip on her flesh loosened, and she looked up at the confused hurt face of her closest friend.
"Why do I care?" His voice lowered, angry and lost, she had gone too far. "I don't even fucking know! I just want to help you, idiot."
"I don't need your help." Yes you do. She turned again, practically running out of the confined space and bursting down the hallway, tears trailing down her freckled skin. She closed herself in her room, like a small child, and curled herself up in the corner, wishing everything would just go away. The hateful voice in her head began to mock her again.

And then there was Taylor, who was broken like she was, who told her she was pretty and made it so the words didn't hurt. Who loved her further for her cracks, not dispite them.
A hiccup jarred her body and her eyes stung with forming tears. God, she couldn't lose him- what would she do then?
Without the boy in a wheelchair, who didn't stop the goofy smile that was always on his face. The man with legs of steel and soft, kind words. The lover, careful and attentive, making sure they did nothing she didn't want to do. The partner, fierce in a way that didn't need angry blows or harsh words.
What would she do of she could never know all the people he had yet to be? The husband, the father, the man with no interest in fishing, but went anyway, but when with her anyway, because she'd never gotten the chance to before. How would she bear it if he never got to be the grandfather or the old man on the chair beside her's.
A choked sob escaped her mouth, shoulders shaking.

/He's just lying to you Annette, like Varus, like Dad, like everyone. He's only doing this to gain your trust. You don't deserve someone like him./
"You're wrong." She sobbed, not believing a word she had said. The voice began to grow louder, hurting Annette's head with its sharp tone.
/You really are just pathetic, aren't you. You still fight me, despite the fact you know i'm right./
"Shut up." She whispered, choked by her own tears.
/Now now Annette, you know i'm right./

He had to say- she'd looked captivating in her skirt, twirling with gold in her ears, but even better out of it.
Soft breaths stirred black curls and tickled his chest, he let his hand trace circles on her shoulder, watching the slow breaths she look, dark eyelashes against her cheeks with gently closed lids.
He shouldn't have done this.
He knew that- he'd just lost Elle, he had things he should have been doing. She was just so beautiful with golden skin and dark eyes that lit up when she got excited- flushed cheeks and the warm weight of a head on his chest that he'd forgotten he missed.
He reached over her, careful not to wake her and pulling a brightly colored sheet up to cover her back, leaning back down, feeling her head shift in wakefulness at his movement. Eyes blinking open and a contented sigh, snuggling closer to him dark and beautiful and how did he deserve to stumble upon perfection twice in his life.
So he guessed it wasn't a mistake

Harvey closed the book, after finishing at least half of it, and looked up at the boy across from him.
"Its around time we should head back yes?"

He jerked, checking the time- yes, technically they should be heading back- but he looked so happy in here he never wanted to leave- he wanted to lean over there and get on his toes and kiss him silly until he didn't remember anything but that smile and that red hair.
"If we put if off a little longer no one will mind." It was a lie, but god did he want to stay here, just watching his face as his eyes tore across page after page!

/how could someone get bored with this?/ He thought, just giving what he assumed to be a reassuring smile. He slid over to sit on the table, having to jump a little to lift himself onto it.

Harvey's face brightened in color, and he looked up at the slightly suggestive but mostly enthused expression on Jack's face. He missed the light touch of their legs under the table but this was in a way better for the ginger. He clutched the book, in awe of the small mans face from this angle. His eyes glistened ever so slightly in the brighter light of the room. That same light shone through his hair was like the sun shining through clouds after a long storm.
Harvey felt something he had barely felt before, a desire in a way he had never felt for another human.
He smiled his stupid tilted smile in the pure joy he got near Jack.
