Everett had landed a little outside of Paris, where planes and zeppelins from all over the world crowded a single paved surface. Everett found the hustle and bustle of pilots and riders to be amusing as they scurried from one place to another.
He walked up to a rather formal looking guy, dressed poshly and a clipboard in hand. He introduced himself in a slightly broken french, and asked how he could get to the address his sister had sent. The man curtly sent him on his way down empty streets. Everett assumed the emptiness of even the outskirts was due to the fire that had occurred a week prior to his arrival.
He traveled on foot the entire day, as a few hours in a plane made him considerably uncomfortable, through streets blackneed by smoke and ash. He sighed as he pictured how the streets had looked earlier, and continued until he reached a bridge heading ouside the city.
Dried blood stained the cold stone he walked on, a sight he had become strangely familiar with. Such an idea would have disturbed a younger him, but the pools of various bloods she had left in her wake led him to believe that maybe one day he could see her again.
However much he loved her, his brother was in trouble, and that would have to be his focus for the moment.
He continued down the empty street that turned to dirt as the farms outside Paris waved in the winds. He saw a large farm house far in the distance, as the sun reached a point near 4:00. The stone house, maybe an inn at one point, seemed quiet for such a large one, this kind of quiet was a strange sort of pleasing to Everett. The kind of nice quiet he could use to his advantage, but the empty fields added a sort of loneliness to the feel of the area.
Uneven stones lead up to the large house, and he pulled the letter out of his jacket, checking the numbers on the door and hoping he wouldn't have to be in such quiet for so long.He looked at the windows in hopes to see inside, but the light of the sun made them appear black.
With a sigh he walked the disheveled stones and knocked on the large, wooden door.

Jack had been holding himself together incredibly well, since his breakdown before. His movements were fluid and quick, without the genuineness that came with his usual stumbles and hesitations. He stood tall and made decisions no 17 year old should have to make. He finished his paintings, faces he used to see waking down the street, a man with two sons and no wife, children left behind. The firey red hair and quicksilver eyes of a boy invested in a book. A friendly, round woman who'd brought bread down from the bakery she ran on the city's edge.
42. That's how many were missing or dead, hundreds left with no where to go as he struggled to find places for them to stay. He knew how losing a home hurt, it'd happened to him enough times. 42 new portraits, 42 sets of eyes telling him he'd failed all over again.
He opened the door when he heard knocking, expecting a delivery, piles of letters asking for help, (as if he wasn't already pushing as hard as he could to get them it.)
Instead he saw a shock of red hair, (not the right shade, brighter than that, lighter.) he stood, dumbly for a moment, stepping aside. His hair pinned back to keep out of his face in the hours he spent hunched over a desk. Mismatched eyes assessing, one predator assessing another, (is this territory worth the fight?) back straight and stance wide as though it could make up for his lack of height.
"From the hair, I'm going to assume you're a Finely." He said, voice even. Ice and fire because everything about the eldest Finely led him to conclude he was a man who was used to being in charge, and the inevitable clash would be an impressive one.

"Your assumption is correct." Everett's grey eyes scanned the short boy. He was strong, maybe not physically, but his posture was one of a leader, broken yet strong. His body was locked in a barely defensive stance, and Everett took note to not do things that would make him angry. Everett smiled lightly, a smile quite a lot of his family shared, extending his hand invitingly toward the boy"Everett. You are?"

"Jack," he accepted the offered hand with a moment's hesitation. Every part of him tensed to jump into action at a moment's notice. This wasn't his sector, (not his territory) and he wasn't in charge, (was an alpha without a pack even anything more than a stray dog?)
Unfamiliar surrondings and high stress decision making weren't a combination one worked to achieve.

"Pleasure to meet you." He spoke with a confidence he had mastered over years of training, "I understand the fires must have affected you, if it means anything, I'm sorry."
The silence that met his words made him slightly, but not visibly uncomfortable. He searched his mind for something to say, but his search was interrupted by a pair of low red pigtails that he hadn't seen in over three years.
"Everett?" She approached him, she looked aged, dark circles under her eyes, and a metal arm swaying lightly with her steps. Her eyes brightened as she looked at his figure, and she quickly wrapped her arms around him like a small child. He returned her hug, but this wasn't what he remembered them to be. She seemed so close to lost, and his own heart sank. "I'm so glad you're here."
"We'll get him back, Annette." She slowly let go of him, and began walking toward a room, gesturing him to follow.
"We have to."

Jack stiffened, a surge of bitterness rising up in his chest, closing the door and taking a moment as the pair left the room, head pressed to the dark wood of the door. It was cool and firm against his head, a solid, grounding weight that he needed so much at that moment. There were voices from in the next room over, but he barely heard.
"Arwr?" Damion's cautious, low voice, dark figure leaning against the doorway. "Arwr, you know I can take over some of the work, you just need to ask."
Jack didn't pull away from the door, "I need the distraction." He responded, monotone. The quiet movement behind him, almost silent as the man approached. "Dihiryn-"
"You need to take a moment Arwr, look at it objectively." Big hands turned him, firm girp on his shoulders. "You cannot expect to be able to save everyone. It's damn near impossible that you cleared out as many as you did."

"I have Harper searching for the bastard." Everett said the words more casually than he meant, his voice only slightly tense. "She'll send us information as soon as possible."
"If he does anything to Harvey I swear I'll..." Her voice died out, outlining the difference between the two siblings. Annette wore her heart on her sleeve, and Everett preferred his safely tucked in his chest.
"If he does he will have to face us."
She relaxed a bit, but her hands still tightened, her knuckles turning white.
"How is Riley?" Everett asked, attempting to calm her.

Jack wasn't a pretty crier. His face got red and his eyes got watery and his eyebrows creased as he tried to swallow past the knot in his throat. And he'd fight it so hard that he'd tire himself out and let it loose. Fingers holding tight in his friend's shirt, (one time, he took a chance one time and look what it got him.) Some kind of dark, soft material he was too desperate to name. Strong arms around him, holding him up as his knees buckled, (so many people were counting on him but he was only nineteen and he'd just lost his home.)
"It's alright Arwr, I got you." (He didn't say it as an assurance but a reminder, that this wasn't new, but it was constant.)One of those big, scarred hands no one else seemed to realize were so gentle and careful was in his hair now, smoothing it, rhythmic and soothing. (Maybe they'd gotten the names wrong, maybe Damien was the Arwr and Jack was the Dihiryn.)

"He's been having quite a lot of fun sleeping 17 hours a day." Annette said, a slight smile coming to her face for the first time in days. The smile dropped quickly as her mind turned elsewhere, to blood spilling on stones and one blue eye. "Everett..."
"Yeah?"
"I think she was there, the girl you'very been looking for, she had metal legs and I-"
"Annette, Its okay."
"But you've been looking for her haven't you?"
"Yes... and I still love her... but I've been searching since she left, and I won't let Harvey get hurt, even if that means I have to stop." Annette could feel an emptiness from her brothers words, something she understood only recently.

Shaky breaths as minutes passed and the sobbs slowed, passed. He recalled a conversation not far back, 'You can't keep cutting yourself off like this Arwr.' and 'If you take enough chances you're gonna end up getting some of them right." (He recalled thinking that was like saying if you jumped off a cliff enough times the air would eventually catch him on the way down.)
"I finally took that chance Dihiryn." Once he'd calmed enough to say it.
"And do you regret it? Him?"
"No."

"I will end Varus I swear." She muttered grimly, her fists clenching as she felt a mix of anger and emptiness clutch at her gut.
"I won't be the one to hold you back." He stated shortly, aware of the violence his younger sister could cause. "But I'm afraid I, at least, am acting under the restrictions of the government, whether those are few or great."
"I don't care, Everett," her voice was dark, bitter, as if she had lost everything. "I just want him back."
"Where is the letter he sent?"
"I'll get it." She stood and marched out, leaving Everett alone in the quiet of the room, hearing low voices he couldn't make out through the walls.

"You couldn't expect to have been watching him the whole time Arwr." His hands carded through the boy's hair, "your need to be the hero willl be your downfall."
"I should have gone with him-"

Annette opened the door to the room Riley inhabited, a room where he had attempted to get her to sleep, but she knew she couldn't sleep if she wanted to.
"Good morning." Riley grump led ad the light of the outside world hit his face. He shifted uncomfortably and sat up, stretching. Annette visibly loosened at seeing him awake.
"You know it's 4 in the afternoon right?"
"You know it's concerning that you sleep all day?"
"You know it's concerning you don't."
"Riley..." Her voice softened. He knew very well how upset she was, and he knew how hard it was for her to sleep even on a good day. She fumbled around in a small desk the room had, looking through a few drawers.
"Yeah. Yeah I know. 3rd one." He stated, Standing up for the first time in at least 12 hours.
"Thanks... Oh and Everett showed up, you might want to talk to him eventually."
"I will," He looked at her as she turned to leave the room, then reached out to grab her hand, forcing her into a hug before letting her go and putting on a decent amount of clothing he lacked.

Everett had been listening to every word through the wall, intently, after his sister went somewhere else. He heard every word the king of criminals cried and he heard every word the other tried. He absent mindedly clutched onto the arm of the couch, his hands practically tearing the delicate weaving apart. He relaxed his hands as he realized this, and instead stared at the wall the voices were heard from with some sort of intensity.
He didn't know someone's regrets could make him so angry, but the mention of his little brother as if he were dead made a well of fury pool in his gut. He wasn't gone just missing, and the faltering voice of Jack would not have been one of a leader. He could understand being upset, but for Everett someone who wasn't family to act in such a way was just dispicable. This boy was a leader, and so was Everett, but you didn't see Everett breaking down despite the fact that it was his brother.
"Everett?" Annette looked at him oddly, as he hardly noticed her appearance in the room.
"What does he have anything to do with this?" Everett asked calmly, but a bit louder than he would have liked, despite the anger in his stomach. He was trained to not show malaties, especially not to trouble his younger sister.
"Varus?" She looked shocked by his volume.
"Jack."
"He helped us."
"Yes but with what? It seems unlikely a criminal like him would care for anything that happened to anyone like our brother." Everett couldn't explain why he had gotten louder, but some part of him hoped Jack had heard, and another hoped he didn't.
